In machine tool drive systems, commonly used drive components include pulleys, gears, worm gears, gear racks, and screw nuts. These drive components connect the power source to the actuator, or connect two actuators, which is called a drive connection. A series of sequentially arranged drive components that constitute a drive connection is called a drive chain.
Drive chains typically include two types of drive mechanisms: one type is a drive mechanism with a fixed transmission ratio and direction, such as a constant-ratio gear pair, worm gear pair, etc., called a constant-ratio drive mechanism; the other type is a drive mechanism whose transmission ratio and direction can be changed according to processing requirements, such as a stepped gear change mechanism, sliding gear change mechanism, etc., called a change mechanism.
According to the nature of the transmission connection, drive chains can be divided into two categories:
1. Internal connection drive chain: The motion (rotation and linear movement) of the actuators it connects belongs to an independent continuous motion according to motion analysis, so the relative motion relationship between the actuators has strict requirements. Drive chains with this kind of connection properties are called internal connection drive chains. Therefore, internal connection drive chains do not include uncertain or instantaneous transmission ratio change drive mechanisms, such as belt drives, chain drives, friction drives, etc. For example, when processing threads on a lathe, the thread drive connecting the main shaft and the tool holder is an internal connection drive chain with strict transmission ratio requirements, which can ensure and obtain the required pitch of the thread.
2. External connection drive chain: This is the drive chain connecting the motion source and the machine tool actuator. It allows the actuator to obtain the predetermined speed of motion and transmit a certain amount of power, but it does not require a strict transmission ratio relationship between the motion source and the actuator. The change of the transmission ratio of the external connection drive chain only affects the productivity and surface roughness, but does not affect the formation of the workpiece surface shape.

Chain Limitations
